All lab assignments are due at the beginning of section; no late assignments accepted.

Late attendance to section will result in a 50% reduction in attendance grade.

Lab 1

Required Reading

  • Student Guide (also handed out during the first day of lectures)
  • The Mechanical Design Process by Ulllman; Course Reader p 1-10.
  • Clock Project parts 1 & 2 (Escapement wheel and pendulum)

Due in Section

Only for section on the first lecture day, (Thursday) both Lab HW1 and Lab HW2 assignments can be handed in together during their second lab meeting.
Due in Lecture
  • Tuesday --DFM Extra Credit: Find an object in everyday life where the design includes aspects relating to DFM. Typically these relate to cost reduction while still providing for high performance parts. A common approach is  low tolerance design that still allow for easy assembly.  Examples presented in class include:
    • Large clearance holes
    • Slots
    • Texture on plastics parts to hide imperfections, so that a lower cost molds can be used.
    Write up a 1-2 page summary including a photo of the part and a description of what features of DFM were used. 

    Your example must be different than the ones above, and you must physically touch the product and evaluate it. Web photos are not acceptable.

    After you use your intuition to identify DFM features, you can look up aspects on the internet for verification.

    • printing out screen shots is fine
  • If you customized your nut holder, email it to your section tutor

  • Tuesday -- Complete the Physics Pre-Quiz at home, but this time with higher accuracy.

Lab 3

Required Reading

  • 3D Spatial Visualization - Sorby (on TritonED)

  • Plastic pendulum and escapement wheel cutouts
  • 3D Visualization Assignment (The answers can be turned in on a separate piece of paper)
  • Complete SolidProfessor Features and Part Design
    • Complete the "Review Test" at the end of the lesson
    • Print out a screen shot of the "Plummer Block" and the "Hanger Bracket"
  • Clock Intermediate Timing Analysis:
    • Theoretical point mass approximation. See Natural Frequency of a Point Mass
      • Print out your Excel file using the Template in the Excel Tutorial. One printout to show numerical results and a second printout to show equations using named variables.
    • Intermediate verification. Measure the mass and estimate the center of mass of your pendulum.
    • Reminder: Next week the completed clock report is due!

      • This object is tricky for some people, but it can be done in under 5 minutes. Please email CAD tutor Nick at nol005@ucsd.edu if it is taking you longer than 30 minutes to figure out how to start it. It's his job! You aren't bothering him at all!
      • Tip: use the mirror feature strategically, and save fillets for the end

Hand sketching is a very important tool in design. It helps you to quickly communicate ideas to yourself and others.
